Tin Project

Solid Cast Tin Glaze

Whist studying at the Royal College of Art, I won an award given by The Worshipful Company of Tin Plate Workers Alias Wire Workers for innovative and original use of tin oxide.
In my project, I wanted to subvert the normal application of glaze, as a durable coating or decorative layer on the surface of a form. I wanted the glaze to be the form itself.
Using a tin oxide base glaze, I added colorants such as cobalt and copper oxides to create vibrant, solid, cast glaze discs.
Treating the liquid glaze as if it were glass, I fired it over four days in a kiln, annealing it slowly, developing different textures and surfaces.
